“I still don’t understand,” I said as kindly as I possibly could. “I feel like you’re hovering around something important, but you’re not clarifying what that something is.”

As a university professor, I spent a lot of time trying to help students improve their writing. When you’re a teacher in the Department of Dance, you get many passionate students who are sometimes better at structuring choreography than a Dance History paper.

Still, over the years, I noticed that the students who were best at creating compelling works of art on stage were also some of the best writers in the classroom.

Because whether you’re trying to create art, sell a product, excite investors, or convince voters to make a change — everything boils down to an ability to communicate ideas.

The best artists, entrepreneurs, startup founders, leaders, and influencers know the value of a good idea. Better yet, they know how to distill all the incredible information floating around their brain into one, single, powerful concept that resonates long after the applause, meeting, checkout, or vote ends.

These days, as a public speaking coach and communication expert, the lessons I tried to teach my clients are the same lessons I try to teach those eager to inspire others. The online world is crowded and noisy. It’s not always easy to grab the attention of those you hope to serve.

If you happen to find something shareable, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn have the potential to magnify your voice — and authority. But too many people jump to please the masses (or algorithm gods) without getting crystal clear on a compelling, contagious, and essential idea.

So we continue to get bombarded with generic content, how-to listicles, and forgettable advice.

Humans are forgetful. We can’t hold on to too many details. So instead of trying to jam-pack your platforms with as much content as possible, try spending that…
